Flash Fiction Workshop (Central Library) In-Person
Come along to a free creative writing workshop and learn about writing very short stories (also known as ‘flash fiction’).
During the workshop you will:
- Learn what flash fiction is and what the key techniques are
- Use some fun writing prompts – including hand-printed images from the library’s Otakou Press Room – to help you get started
- Write your own story
- Learn about opportunities for publication
You will also have the chance to showcase your writing at an end-of-year exhibition. (This is optional, if you’re shy.)
The workshops are free and open to all University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic students and staff. Whether you’re a confident writer, starting out, or just want to try something new, everyone is welcome.
The session will be taught by the University of Otago’s 2023 Robert Burns Fellow, Kathryn van Beek. Kathryn is the winner of the Mindfood Short Story Competition and the Headland Prize. Her work has appeared in Overland, takahē, Newsroom, The Spinoff, and in several anthologies.
